Are Not The Same Wants And Needs Here
£5.50
This 78 page digital book brings together elements from three distinct projects. Each have their own particular focus and intention. Each is a development of the techniques and methods of the preceding one.
COLLAGE AND CORRECTED IMAGERY
My use of found material is an attempt to mediate rather than remove my hand from the image. It also raises ethical questions around the element of remote/ unknowing collaboration, of the message carried by the physical making of the work, of practical copyright issues and of the ecological value of recycling material.
All the found elements came from the collected 1955 Encyclopedia Britannica.
SWEARY COLLAGE
These pictures use hand-drawn and often quite challenging words within collaged, corrected and drawn elements. The words are used
to variously deepen, challenge or completely subvert the meaning of the drawings. The combination is a definite attempt to move my work beyond the ‘merely illustrative’.
Here, the found material is drawn from a variety of sources including ‘The Tate’, ‘The RA’ and ‘The National Trust’ publications.
ARE NOT THE SAME WANTS AND NEEDS HERE
This series is an exploration of my attitude to the apparent extreme bifurcation of our current political and social systems. The work features two identifiable groups talking to and around a seemingly flashpoint issue.
The found material is drawn from ‘The Art of Michelangelo’ and the latest ‘Seasalt’ catalogue.
Following my desire to integrate my visual and sonic practice, these images were used as a score to produce the soundtrack available at https://steveappleton.bandcamp.com/album/are-not- the-same-wants-and-needs-here
